Authoring App Features

WYSIWYG Editor

Ryuzine Machine features a powerful, feature-packed WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) visual editor.  You can also work in “code view” with or without a preview pane. (Note: on iOS devices only code view is available).

Template Builder

No need to start from scratch!  The Template option lets you select which kinds of content your Ryuzine will have and automatically generates a template for you.  Just fill it in with your own text and images.

HTML Import

Import simple HTML files tagged with Ryuzine styles and convert them into Ryuzine web apps.  You can create the files with any third-party HTML or text editor you like and then import them for further editing and/or processing.  Ryuzine Machine can also import existing Ryuzine magazines for further editing.  All right in your web browser and with no server-side code!

Export Options

With Ryuzine there are a lot of optional components.  If you don’t select any you’ll get the bare-bones no-frills version, but if you want to jazz it up just select which add-ons or theme you’d like to use and click the “WebAppify!” button.

Device Simulator

Preview how your magazine will look and behave on different screen sizes with the Device Simulator.  You can choose from iPhone, iPad, Droid, and a generic Honeycomb tablet, rotate the device orientation, see it in “Browser” or “App” viewing modes, and add your own custom device profiles.  You don’t need an emulator installed and you don’t need to own the actual device.

Works ON Mobile Devices

The Ryuzine Machine itself is a touch-enabled web app so it will work on many mobile devices running iOS, Android, and webOS.  That means you can create a Ryuzine targeting mobile devices ON a mobile device.

There is a blog post with tables comparing Ryuzine Machine and the Ryuzine reader web app to similar products.  See how they stack up against the competition!

Reading App Features

Ryuzine leverages HTML5, CSS3, and Javascript technologies to deliver more than just a web page to end readers.  Modern browsers are becoming more than just viewers, they are now web application platforms geared to our future in “The Cloud.”  The Ryuzine reader web app is also standards compliant; passing HTML5, US Section 508 and WCAG2 v1 AAA accessibility validation*.

Cross-Platform, Cross-Browser

Ryuzine works on Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OSX, Linux, Apple iOS, Google Android, Windows Phone 7.5, BlackBerry Tablet OS, and HP webOS.

Tested on Safari, Mobile Safari, Chrome, Chrome Mobile, Firefox, Firefox “Fennec” Mobile, Opera, Internet Explorer, BlackBerry Playbook, webOS Browser.

However, unlike many web apps Ryuzine doesn’t leave older browsers and lower-end hardware out in the cold! By using backwards-compatible code and providing options to fine-tune the experience, your Ryuzine content accommodates the past, present, and is prepared for the future.  View the full COMPATIBILITY MATRIX table in the manual (which is in Ryuzine format).

For Readers

Multi-Control

Keyboard, Mouse, and Touch controls give users on all kinds of devices a way to peruse your magazine.

Multiple Viewing Modes

Magazine Style, Continuous Pages, and Plain HTML let readers control the experience and accommodates low-end devices.

User Adjustable Font

Increase or decrease the font size of articles without zooming the whole app.  Find the perfect size for your screen, whether you are reading on a phone or a large-format monitor.

Pan & Zoom

Touch devices supporting two-finger pinch/spread zoom and zoomed panning offer a user-configurable option to enable or disable it.  This switches between a non-scaleable “app view” and the default pan and zoom options normally available in a web page on such devices.  The special “Pan & Zoom” mode allows readers to pinch/spread zoom and pan without accidentally triggering in-page items or turning pages.  This is particularly useful for web comics or other content readers may wish to zoom.

Personalized Settings

Ryuzine includes an “Options” panel where users can selectively enable and disable features to fine-tune the experience to their personal preferences.  If a reader changes a setting it is saved in a browser cookie file and automatically applied to all Ryuzine magazines served from the same domain.

Share It!

Ryuzine features a built-in e-mail sharing widget that can even be used in magazines downloaded for offline reading (client email application required).  When you e-mail an online link from a Ryuzine to your friend you can automatically direct them to a specific page within the magazine too!

Publishers can also choose to replace the built-in option with a third-party sharing or other social networking widget.

Make Your Mark!

Publishers can easily archive pages into back issues and upload the current issue under the same URL.  Readers who bookmark that address will enjoy an “Instant Subscription” because whenever they check that bookmark they’ll always be getting the latest issue of the magazine!

In-App Bookmarks are stored in a browser cookie file and are independent of the browser’s bookmarks.  Just click the Bookmark icon in the upper right corner of the publication.

Readers can also save a Ryuzine for offline reading, and some publishers may choose to only offer their periodicals as downloads.  Since Ryuzine doesn’t require any server-side code it will still work even when a reader isn’t connected to the Internet.**

For Publishers

User Interface Localization

A simple add-on feature changes the “Help” information and UI buttons and panels from English to Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese – plus it’s easy for publishers to add support for other languages by editing the add-on script!

Rightbound Books Too!

All magazines and comics don’t read from left to right.  A simple configuration file setting changes your Ryuzine binding to the right-hand side.

Theme It!

Dress up your Ryuzine magazine with add-on themes.  Deliver the same theme to all your readers or deliver different themes to desktops, iOS devices, Android devices, and webOS devices to present a “native app” look and feel.  Or create your own theme to match your existing web site, organization’s color scheme, etc.

Integrated Advertising

If you have a commercial use license it’s easy to include advertising.  Ryuzine has an integrated mobile-style banner ad which can be set to appear/display at regular intervals, add advertising to the app Splash page, and automatically open a lightboxed ad on loading.  Plus, of course, you can place banners and box ads directly in the pages – just like a print magazine.

Now that you know all the features, what are you waiting for? Go get it!

* Refers to the core web app itself without any user-generated content. Validation checks were performed with TotalValidator and the W3C Markup Validation service as HTML5 with UTF-8 encoding. CSS was not checked since it cannot validate with the vendor prefixed styles, which are necessary for proper function and display of the web app in modern browsers.

** Some add-ons will not function properly offline.  If you plan to offer publications as downloads you should either not use add-ons or test it yourself first to make sure the add-ons you are using function correctly.  While Ryuzine uses no server-side code some browser or OS security settings may prevent code from executing in an offline environment.
